2016 Deeper Perspective Photographer of the Year

Andrea Star Reese is a VISURA photojournalist/documentary photographer based in New York, Seattle, and Jakarta. Recent work includes two multi-year projects focusing on people who are invisible to mainstream society.

 

DISORDER (2011-2016) is a five-year ongoing documentary reportage on abuse against people with psychosocial disabilities in Indonesia. The series was first exhibited and screened at Visa Pour L’Image, Perpignan, and at Angkor Photo Festival in 2013. More recently it was included in The 2016 Berlin Foto Biennale and screened at Photojourn Bangkok. Disorder is a 2016 recipient of the Julia Margaret Cameron Award_Overall and the Berlin Foto Biennale Documentary Award: Best Portfolio on Human Rights. A 2014 finalist for the Manual Rivera-Ortiz Grant, a selection from the series was included in American Photography 28: Best pictures from 2011.

Most recently, photographs from the series were commissioned by Human Rights Watch for it’s March 21, 2016 report LIVING IN HELL, and for it’s multimedia report, Indonesia: End Shackling of People with Disabilities, as part of the Break The Chains Campaign.

 

URBAN CAVE (2007-2014) is a seven-year documentary reportage on unsheltered men and women living underground in New York City. It was first exhibited at Visa Pour L’Image 2010 and nominated for Visa d’Or, Feature. Urban Cave received the 2016 Julia Margaret Cameron Award_Overall, the 2014 David Pike Award for Excellence in Journalism_Photography, and Best Social Documentary from The 2009 New York Photo Festival. Urban Cave was a finalist for the 2013 FotoEvidence book award and received a 2014 Kontinent 2nd Place Award and a 2011 Fotovisura 2nd place Award. In 2011 it was a POYI: World Understanding proceeded by other recognitions. Most recently a selection of prints from Urban Cave were exhibited at The Berlin Foto Biennale, and the Musee de L’Elysee, Lausanne where the prints are part of the museum’s collection. The series was included in several traveling exhibitions for FotoEvidence and ReGeneration 2, exhibited at Theory of the Clouds Gallery, Kobe, Japan, and at the 2013 Athens Photo Festival. In 2015 the photobook URBAN CAVE was published by FotoEvidence.

 

Ms Reese began her career as a filmmaker in 1983 and transitioned to Photojournalism/Documentary Photography in 2007. A tutor for 2013 Angkor Photo Festival Workshop, now on staff at the International Center of Photography School, Andrea Star Reese is a 2010 fellow in Photography from the New York Foundation for the Arts and a reGeneration2 photographer.
