Entry Description: These photographs from Sudan were taken over a four year period as a part of personal projects and commissioned assignments.

About the Artist:

After completing a University degree in Wildlife Biology J played drums in an Indie-Rock band for several years, recording two albums and touring throughout the US and Europe. Packing his drums, he joined the Peace Corps bringing along an old Nikon FM2 to Ecuador and realized his true passion lay in photography. After the Peace Corps, J began freelancing in his hometown of Washington D.C. and in 2004 he moved to Africa to focus on Sudan. Based abroad, J. has traveled extensively throughout Africa, shooting features for The New York Times Magazine, TIME, Newsweek, Fortune, CNN, Runner’s World, Good Housekeeping, ESPN the Magazine, National Geographic Adventure, The Discovery Channels and Dazed & Confused Magazine. His NYPH Awards Honorable Mention photograph of a humanitarian food drop in Darfur, Sudan was published in the National Geographic Book “Visions of Paradise”. J Carrier is now based in Jerusalem developing a personal project on land and displacement. He continues to work on assignment throughout the Middle East and Africa.
