Entry Description: A series that aims to portray people ‘as they see themselves’ in the mirror. When being photographed the sitter only sees their own reflection - looks into their own eyes, rather than the lens, at the moment of taking.
The camera is hidden behind mirrors in a custom built, dark-box housing. Sitters are still aware of the photographer and camera’s presence, but are only faced with their reflections whilst the session is underway.
The resulting images aim to reveal more intimate moments of addressing the self and insights into the laterally inverted perception of appearances.

Karen Grainger completed her MA in Photography at London College of Communication 2009 and previously gained a BA (hons) in Fine Art at Birmingham Institute of Art and Design. Her work has been selected for group exhibitions including Bloomberg New Contemporaries and she has undertaken residencies at The New Art Gallery, Walsall (UK) and more recently for The Julia Margaret Cameron Trust in the UK. Her work has been selected for the University of the Arts London Public Collection.
