About the Artist:

Julie Platner (b. 1982) raised in Los Angeles studied Communication Arts and Philosophy at Northeast University in Boston. At the culmination of her studies she moved to NYC to work in Film and TV Production working on such projects as 'Flight of the Conchords' and the HBO film 'Sugar.' In 2009 Platner shifted focus to telling 'real' stories. Primarily pursuing personal projects and human issues that interest her, Platner aspires not to be a photographer or a director but a storyteller. Story and characters are what fascinate her, a basic curiosity of human nature is the motivation. Her most recent project is the development of a not-for-profit called The Lens Foundation. The Lens Foundation seeks to provide arts education to those that otherwise might not have the opportunity. Currently, she is teaching a summer photography workshop in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn to children with incarcerated parents. Platner has given special media presentations at the Rand Corporation, The Foreign Policy Association, the National Press Photographers Association and at NYU for the International Center of Photography and the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives (a symposium on Committed Photojournalism).
