Entry Description: The handling of garbage and waste is a major challenge in any developed city in the world but much more so in places like Managua, Nicaragua, where it is as much an environmental issue as it is social since thousands of people live off of it in horrific conditions.

About the Artist:

Luiz Maximiano (b. 1978, Assis Chateaubriand, PR, Brazil) graduated in Communication at ESPM, in Sao Paulo. As a photographer, he covered the war in Afghanistan, ethnic conflicts in Burma, the HIV crisis in southern Africa, elections in Pakistan, the struggles of Roma communities in Eastern Europe and social crisis in Latin America. In 2007, he was awarded the Canon Prize as the best photojournalist under 30 in the Netherlands. He was also chosen twice a finalist for the prestigious World Press Photo Masterclass. His work has appeared in many leading publications around the world such as Newsweek, Time, Der Spiegel, Le Figaro, The Independent, Bloomberg, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Die Welt, Panorama, L'Espresso and others. He is based in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
