Michael Zajakowski has been a photojournalist, director of photography and photo editor for 26 years. He began his career in photojournalism in Chicago after studying with Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist John H. White. As a staff photographer for The Times of Northwest Indiana, he was The Times’ first foreign correspondent, reporting from Poland as the country emerged from Communism in 1989. As an early advocate of digital photojournalism, Michael converted The Times to an all-digital photo department, and subsequently was invited to present at South Africa’s first photojournalism conference. Michael joined the Chicago Tribune as a picture editor in 1998, and currently is the picture editor for the Chicago Tribune Magazine. In 2000, Michael was a contributing editor and photographer for CITY2000, a project to document the city of Chicago. Michael currently also teaches visual communication in the graduate journalism program at DePaul University in Chicago.
