Kumartuli is traditionally potters quarters on the north of Kolkata, West Bengal, India. The reason its famous is because of the talented artisans who resides there. They are the experts in creation of idols of Hindu Gods all the year round. There artwork is exported to far countries of Europe, America and Africa. During this time of the year the small lanes and streets of this area is bustling with activity, as its time for the annual Hindu festival of the country, the Durga Puja. These artisans are works day and night to create idols of various shapes and sizes, to deliver all across the country. Usually one idol takes around 10-15 days to be finished. These artist comes from various parts of the state of West Bengal to earn there livelihood. In recent times idols made of Fiberglass are also been produced and exported to various parts of the country and the world. Despite the threat of "theme artists", where in the Idols they make are form metals or wood rather than the traditional clay, majority of the organizers believe in old school artwork. Majority of the artisans hold family business, which has been passed on from generation to generations ahead.
