Story

Gone But Not Forgotten

Our necessity as humans to memorialize our loved ones is a very powerful and personal human trait. Mostly it is a very personal and private emotion, at other times though, it can manifest itself very publicly.

You see them as flashes of color in your peripheral vision that seem out of place to the surroundings as you speed by in your cars. They pop up almost instantaneously on street corners and sidewalks, alleys and highways. And as quickly as they pop up, many are soon gone with the winds of time. Others, more permanent in design and construction, will be there for years. Others are returned to on an annual basis, to freshen up, leave a new note or memento and to once again remember what most likely tragically happened at that particular location.

Gone But Not Forgotten is an ongoing study of photographic images of roadside memorials from around the world. They are found everywhere and represent the tragic loss of our collective loved ones. We’ve seen them on the nightly news broadcast. They are sometimes small and sometimes large. They can represent the passing of an individual or an entire family. They are traffic accidents, murders, and suicides among other instantaneous reasons that a human being or beings lost their life at that particular place.

For me they are a constant reminder of how fragile life and time is as we go about our individual journeys through life.
