In freezing, foggy silence, the symbol of Paris towers over the Peace Memorial in the field where Robespierre dedicated France to the worship of the Supreme Being in the year 20 Prairial Year II (8 June 1794). Challenging the Cult of Reason of those who had torn down the power of the Church, he attempted to focus citizens on God through promoting the ideals of liberty, democracy and justice in a republican society.
