The Tungurahua volcano in Ecuador is one of the well-loved stratovolcanoes, with a very classic shape and a setting in a valley that allows for the connection of Amazonian and Pacific surface winds. In the last 1300 years, it has undergone major activity every 80 or so years (1773, 1886, 1916-18 and on and off since 1999). The 1999 event forced the evacuation of the 25,000 population of the local town of Banos. In December 2012 another major eruption occurred. These are images taken over a twenty-four hour period: sunset, evening, midnight, dawn and midday.
