This photograph is from the series Slow Road to China, which presents portraits of the resilient people of the Humla region of northwestern Nepal. The whole of the project presents intimate portraits of this Himalayan community and the ways in which they have shaped and preserved their way of life. Concealed and precarious to reach, Humla’s inhabitants consider themselves to be the last stronghold of pure Tibetan culture, but as modernity beckons to the younger generations, elders fight to retain the rich and unique traditions of their ancestors. In this image, an elderly woman wears traditional jewelry in Humla.
