On various trips; as well as a lengthy stay in San Francisco, I intensified my interest in reportage and portrait photography. San Francisco is a place of cheerful tolerance, liberalness and a lust for life, but also a place where people live on the breadline. For me a fascinating contrast. Observations by day were followed by extensive expeditions through the nightlife of San Francisco. This resulted in numerous pictures, snapshots, partially laid-back, partially melancholy portraits of the city and its residents: hippies, artists, transvestites, homosexuals, musicians – and seemingly ‚normal people'.
