The stark Antarctic Beech (Nothofagus Antarctica) stand as skeletons in the aftermath of 3 ferocious fires that have plagued Chile’s Torres Del Paine National Park since 2005. The most recent fire occurred in Dec/Jan 2011/2012 scorching more than 40,000 acres of park land. All 3 fires were the result of careless visitors. I wanted to create an image that revealed the damage of the fires, as well as the resilience and renewal I saw taking place in the shadow of the dead trees. I think an image can sometimes convey the importance of environmental stewardship better than warning signs. I chose an angle looking up toward the magnificent and iconic Horns to take advantage of the dramatic lighting, giving an uplifting feel to the image while not ignoring the destruction. I waited out periods of rain and wind for this moment of clearing.
