MATER : From the observation that pregnant virgins are less represented than nursing virgin in Marian iconography and Christian art, I wanted to operate a dialogue between two particular moments of motherhood. Through two images appearing the before and after childbirth, I try to highlight the effects of physical and psychological changes we can read on the bodies and faces of those mothers. Between these two images, the history of motherhood. Between these two images, the history of mankind. One of the aims of this work is revealing the universality of this gesture by conveying a sense of timelessness: leaving out any traces of contemporary days, relieving each mother of everything that might give away a point in time or place, I focus on the mother and child relation, as well as on the beauty and emotion emanating from these different moments.
