20 years ago our dad, Harry, succumbed to pneumonia while living in DuPage County Convalescent Center in Wheaton, Illinois. It had been nearly six years after a massive stroke had devastated the left side of his brain. During those six years, the cumulative effects from repeated seizures chipped away at his mind. After three years of living at home, we could no longer provide the care he needed, so in spring 1993 we moved him to the Center until his passing in November, 1995 Pictured here: Diagnosed with pneumonia in mid-November 1995, my father is comforted by my mother after receiving The Phone Call from the nurses saying that she "should come out here now." My mother had signed a DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) order when he arrived at the Center. While Dad had been ill before, this time we knew it was just a matter of time.
