Lake Inle is the second largest lake in Myanmar. It is home to a number of species that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Over 70,000 people live and work on this lake. Many live in houses on stilts and fish and farm in floating gardens. Trade of handmade goods occurs in rotating markets. The lake has recently been severely affected by a huge change in agricultural methods and the surge in tourism. The lake is, therefore, growing smaller and suffering from pollution, sewage dumping and non-native species being introduced. Public awareness is key to keeping the fragile ecosystem in place.
