A cock-fight is a battle that takes place between two cocks of the same breed, staged by breeders for entertainment. The origins of Peruvians cock fighting dates back to the Spanish conquest, when the rooster was introduced to the Americas. In Peru these battles are legally held and extremely popular, with many championships taking place during the year. The ‘coliseums’ are places where all types of people from different social classes enjoy the sport. However, there exists controversy around this brutal sport as animal rights activists have demanded the halt of this inhumane practise. Fans strongly defend this form of entertainment, where the betting and financial sums for winners can be lucrative. In this way, cock-fighting could be argued as is an art form and cultural tradition worthy of preservation. However, critics compare the spectacles to acts of torture that serve no end other than entertainment and normalize animal brutality.
