Milan was for Gabriele Basilico the beginning of his research and documentation of the city and the urban landscape. His first photographic project “Milan portraits of factories 1978-80” is an extensive work dedicated to the industrial outskirts of Milan. In this regard, Basilico said: “I think those portraits of factories, now thirty years old, were born from the need to add a balance between a social mandate – which no one had ever given, but that was the consequence of the admiration that I felt for the work of the great photographers of the past – and the desire to experience a new language, in freedom and without ideological conditioning”. From this moment on, the vision of the photographer changes and thus begins a quest that will take him to many cities of the world, among which Beirut, Istanbul, Shanghai... “_en I can see fragments of Milan, of my history of Milan, around Europe and, in the opposite direction, when I come from another city, by analogy or opposition, meeting in Milan new signs before strangers.” Enrich the volume texts and contributions: Roberta Valtorta, Gabriele Basilico (Letter to my city), Francesco De Gregori, Michele De Lucchi, Massimo Minin, Marco Romano, Gianni Ladle, Vittorio Gregotti, Marco Belpoliti, Luca Doninelli, Stefano Boeri, Mario Calabresi, Ferruccio De Bortoli, Gustavo Chermes, Matthew Hocks, Fulvia Brace, Francesco Moschini, Italo Rota, Alvaro Siza, Marina Spada.
