This pro bono series features kids with childhood cancer (and some of their supportive siblings), dressed up as superheroes and placed in environments around Chicago. Cancer is tough but kids are strong, and I wanted to reflect that sentiment in this work in order to help reinforce that attitude in their fight. These images were created simply as a gift for the families.

Story

In 2010 I was diagnosed with a very rare and aggressive form of cancer. When I plugged my information into an online survival rate calculator it said I had a 35% chance to live five years.

After a year of treatment my doctors told me they needed to amputate my leg to give me my best chance to survive. Five years later I am cancer free and enjoy finding ways to donate my time to help improve the lives of people going through similar circumstances.

Earlier this year I had the idea to photograph kids with childhood cancer dressed up as superheroes in order to brighten their day and hopefully help shape their attitude in their fight. Cancer is tough, but kids are strong. I hope these pictures, which we are gifting to the families, help these kids see themselves as the superheroes we know they are.
