During a two-week fall canoe trip in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, we awoke to a cool, foggy morning on Lake Two. As we stood on the shore admiring the twilight, we anticipated that a spectacular scene would unfold at sunrise. My husband, Gary Fiedler, paddled his canoe into the tranquil morning as I captured the moment with my camera. The fog silently caressed the land and lake, and the sun reached through the fog to gild the canoe. The silhouette of the canoeist effortlessly gliding along the lake illustrates the solitude and serenity we cherish in the American wilderness. Viewing the photograph today transports me to the wilderness where my soul is nourished and my spirit is inspired, where I am present and free in each moment, and synchronized with nature’s rhythm.
