Malaysia’s island state of Penang is mostly known as a tropical paradise. But for several months a year, it experiences monsoon seasons that bring severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall. Celestial Reverie is my ongoing project to capture the brilliant flashes of lightning that rage above the skyline of its capital city, George Town, during such storms. I have long been captivated by the random and organic patterns of lightning, dancing across the heavens with poetic beauty, yet possesing almost infinite power. They are a stark contrast to the orderly nature of mankind’s built environment, and serve as portent reminders that we will always live under nature’s spectre. And while each bolt is so fleeting, lasting mere fractions of a second, the power of photography allows us to tame and capture them, for posterity.
