Stephanie's interest is to photographically study what goes on during the in between state of perception. These photographs work with ambiguous, abstract information, provoking the in the moment experience of the 'taking', the altered process states and subsequently the 'looking', releasing associations, fantasies and memories between the photographer, subject and ultimately the viewer.
In her conceptual photographs and mixed media pieces, the American artist Stephanie Pfriender Stylander, a Lucie Award and a American Photography Award winner, conceives a metaphoric body of work that explores the psychic occurrences that transpire in between the universal us. Stephanie plays the role of the subject and the photographer as a shrouded ambiguous figure and acts as a female container in the tableau of scenes with its visual coded vocabulary stirring memory and imagination while prompting perception. Stephanie’s choice of working with raw natural materials symbolically speak to endurance, strength, time, ever changing and constant, as the metaphysical is of the human experience. Stephanie earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the School of Visual Arts in New York and a Associate of Science Degree from Endicott College in Massachusetts graduating with honors in photography from both institutions. She furthered her education in a 5 year program at the Center For Modern Psychoanalysis in New York. Stephanie began her career in Milan and Paris as a fashion and celebrity portrait photographer. Her noted evocative style became widely recognized through her cinematic vision and her intimate portraits thus winning numerous awards as well as being included in group shows all over the world. Stephanie’s editorial clients ranged from Vanity Fair, Vogue’s, GQ, Harper’s Bazaar and Interview to her iconic portraits of the world’s most famous actors and musicians of the twenty first century. Stephanie is represented for this work by the Staley-Wise Gallery in New York and the Morrison Hotel Gallery in New York and Los Angeles.
