Suraiya, 28 years old, was attacked with acid by her husband in September 2008 and losted her left eye. The perpetrator convicted to lifetime imprisonment. Acid Survivors Foundation, who works in Dhaka since 1999, helped her for physical treatment, psychological service, legal counseling aand communication with law enforcing agencies. Suraya, now is working as a survivor ambassador in Sabalamby Unnayan Samity,Mymensingh to help the other acid survivors as a project staff of ASF. This photo is part of long term project, called “Heroes”, in collaboration with ASF. In Bangladesh most of the people called them monsters. But they prefer to be considered survivors. For me are HEROES. Disfigured with industrial acid by neighbours, relatives or boyfriends-husbands for economic reasons or senseless jealousies, these people are forced f to survive or years at borders of society.
