Drug addicts take shelter under a bridge across the Kabul river. One part of the collective trauma the country faces is addiction. Afghanistan is not just a world leader in producing drugs, it is also a leading consumer. According to the 2014 World Drug Report by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, 11 percent of the Afghan population tested positive for one or more drugs. The global average is 5.2 percent. Afghanistan provides approximately 85 to 90 percent of the world‘s supply of opium poppy. The bridge area is cleaned of corpses once a week.
