My mother has made sure we grew up knowing of our Indigenous origins. Her mother was a Guarani-Kayowa. My grandmother left the tribe to marry my grandfather and that was when all the indigenous side of the family history ended. I have been a professional photographer all my life and have done a tremendous amount of different assignments all over the world, but never met Brazilian Indigenous culture before this Games- it felt like a visit to my ancestors, my origins. It was intense the shock and awe I felt from the very beginning. Being so far from their world but feeling so intrinsically connected was mind blowing- a strong awareness of belonging. It was an amazing experience, I hope I manage to transmit some of this magical feeling through my photos. It was an absolute honour to be there covering the 1st World Indigenous Games in Brazil.
