One of the highlight of Chinese celebrations and festivities is the Chinese opera performance (if the organisers can afford it) which is included into the program to entertain the crowd, which still appeals to the elder generation who grew up watching these shows as one of their main source of entertainment in their younger days. The younger generation, though, tend to shy away from Chinese opera as they find the shows/stories slow and uninteresting; moreover, some can't follow the storyline as they are not well versed in the Chinese literary culture and language. Which explains the lack of interest to pick up this art form among the young. It was certainly interesting to find a group of people, young and old, enjoying the Chinese version of 'My Fair Lady' at one of the recent festivities in a Kuala Lumpur neighbourhood. Hope there is still hope for this art form yet.
