It is an Ethiopian tradition that mass of Orthodox devotees carry lit candles to celebrate the Easter festival in the churches. These churches were carved out of the mountain rocks hundreds of years ago, but still remain as a holy land to today’s Orthodox devotees. As electrical lights are hardly used inside or outside the churches, devotees also use lit candles to read bible.
