Nurse Rachel Biira sits exhausted with her baby in a dilapidated accommodation as her rent free Kilembe Mines Hospital home was destroyed by the Nyamwamba River floods of May 2013. The government has no programme to replace the nurses’ homes. She pays a horrendously expensive rent, which is a hardship, as there is feeble money left to cover other core expenses. Adding to the financial burden, Rachel has a 2-hour walking journey with her baby strapped on her back as she cannot afford public transport to cover the arduous daily journey to work.
