The recently completed Batumi Hilton stands between the shores of the Black Sea and Batumi Park Lake. Five years ago the port city of Batumi, Georgia’s pastel-coloured playground on the Black Sea Coast, was hardly postcard-worthy. A once-decrepit resort town 12 miles from the Turkish border, Batumi is undergoing a frenzied facelift. Old Town buildings have been renovated and a swanky extension to its four-mile ocean side walkway has been completed as part of a $103.9 million government investment into infrastructure. Still heavily reliant on Georgian beach lovers, Batumi is initially seeking visitors from countries like Armenia and Azerbaijan. The port town hotel visitors are increasing each year, with most coming from the surrounding region, according to the Adjara tourist department. But they’re now looking beyond this and have their sights set on Western visitors.
