On the far removed lands of the reservation in remote Washington State the Native Americans still engage in traditional activities: forest skills, horse racing, hunting, fishing and foraging. This is how these men make money and get food. Their world is at odds with the values of contemporary society but it also contains truths we might prefer to avoid. Brutal actions that match the brutality of the raw nature of the reservation. They have pride in their heritage, their ancient ways and values, and they want to honour and perpetuate them. And survive. I have photographed and worked alongside these men in exchange for my food and accommodation, hunting bears, training horses, felling trees. They have honoured me by giving me an Indian name and the gift of an eagle feather. This is a special honour and carries the meaning of friendship and brotherhood.
