Cairns-based Les Francis loves his bugs. He dedicates his time volunteering for environmental groups who need data on the region’s biodiversity. Here on nature refuge Yourka Reserve in the wet tropics of Far North QLD, he spent his nights camped out by the local waterhole surveying the winged creatures of the forest often staying up until 2am with his ‘green’ desk, light traps and bat recorders. The constant hum of the insects seems to be the only thing that can penetrate the choking darkness of the forest.
