As the sun sets over South Sudan - a mother and child find refuge and help, after a long trek to safety. This mother and child and hundreds more South Sudanese continued to stream in to a United Nations compound seeking protection and shelter, late into the evening. Carrying what they could of their belongings, while accompanied by their children, families arrived exhausted, but relieved – some barefoot after having trekked long distances in the hot afternoon sun. Conflict erupted in Africa's youngest country in early July 2016, causing many to flee their homes.

For this mother and child, help was immediate as UN Peacekeepers were at hand to assist her as she arrived.
As part of its Protection of Civilians mandate, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan once again opened its gates to civilians fleeing their homes after conflict erupted.
