Entry Description

The pictures in this series tell a story of a home for 4-generation Chinese-Indonesians and their efforts to have comfort in the simplicity of their lives. I captured houses of people whom I was not acquainted with. These houses were built in the 30s-60s when the first generation in these families emigrated from China to Indonesia to start a new life. These are the homes where they gave birth to the next generations generation who still faithfully hold to the traditions of their mother land, yet has been fully-adapted to the local Indonesian culture. These pictures silently tell the story of its dwellers, their beliefs, their way of lives, their socio-economic status, and most importantly how they choose to make this house their own. Lastly, “It takes hands to build a house, but only hearts can build a home”. A Home Sweet Home.

Story

Home is the most significant – yet one that is most taken-for-granted-- place in our lives. These are the homes where they gave birth to the second generation. Since then, the second generation has had children and grandchildren of their own, the third and fourth generation of Chinese-Indonesians who still faithfully hold to the traditions of their mother land, yet has been fully-adapted to the local Indonesian culture. These pictures silently tell the story of its dwellers, their beliefs, their way of lives, their socio-economic status, and most importantly how they choose to make this house their own. Lastly, these pictures reminded me that it doesn’t take a luxury to create the comfort of a home. Just as the saying goes, “It takes hands to build a house, but only hearts can build a home”. A Home Sweet Home.

About Photographer

I am a photographer based in Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia, born on 18 October 1969 in the Sulawesi Island of Indonesia, as the fourth child out of seven, and graduated with a Master Degree in International Business from Hawaii Pacific University, USA. I began taking pictures with smartphones, and finally decided to pursue his hobby in photography as an amateur using a viewfinder camera in Mar 2015. I express my passion in documentary photography, with added interest in capturing landscape, human interests, and portraits while I am travelling. In mid October 2015, I opened my own private photo gallery in Malang, East Java, in order to share my passion with my family and friends. Aligned with my passion in Indonesian culture, I restored a full set of gamelan, the traditional Javanese music instruments, inside the gallery, as a contribution to preserve Indonesian culture. I believe that the essence of photography is on the ability to capture life and eternalize the moment.
