Evangelicals are on the rise in Brazil. In fact, Brazil is the biggest Christian country in the world (85 percent of the population—166 million people—call themselves Christians), and the number of those who identify as Evangelical has more than doubled since the turn of the century. In absolute numbers, Brazil has the highest Pentecostal population: 24 million, according to the World Christian Database. The three largest Pentecostal churches in Brazil are the Assemblies of God, the Baptist church, and the Brazilian Christian Congregation. Among them, the Brazilian Christian Congregation—the theme of this photography essay - is the most orthodox towards women. This work aims to be a portrait of female submission trough religious manipulation and ritual in modern times.
