This photograph represents the simultaneity of natural beauty and natural hostility. It shows the mutuality of natural and cultivated shapes. This photograph was taken in the Bjeshkët e Nemuna, the “bewitched mountains” of North Albania. For most people in this barren and inhospitable mountain range – which consists from highly weathered and sparsely vegetated karst – alpine farming and pastoralism in small family associations has been the livelihood for long time. Today the region suffers from rural exodus of the youth and tourism just comes slowly into being. Like “The Shepherd”, only a few families hold onto traditional forms of pastoralism and alpine pasture hikes. Since 2009 I travel every few years in the mountain range of Bjeshkët e Nemuna to perceive transformation processes on social and spatial scales and to meet people I met.
