Entry Description

In her conceptual photographs and mixed media pieces, the American artist Stephanie Pfriender Stylander conceives a metaphoric body of work that explores the psychic occurrences that transpire in between the universal us. Stephanie plays the role of the subject and the photographer as a shrouded ambiguous figure and acts as a female container with its visual coded vocabulary stirring memory and imagination while prompting perception. Her images probe emotionally the unseen but felt with layers of fierceness and penetrating intimacy, thus embracing a disrobing of experiences in our inner life. Stephanie’s choice of working with different types of photographic material and other mediums add symbolism, speaking to the ever changing and constant role of the subject, photographer, and ultimately the photograph.
