The "French Impressions" series began during a trip to southern France. I was struck by the age and history of so much of the architecture there, and wanted to create images that evoked a sense of time and place. Susan Steinhauser, Vice Chair California Arts Council, said of Arle Arch - â€œThis Larson photo conjures up an older, gentler France, reminiscent â€“ to my way of thinking â€“ of Atget and, yet, is more contemporary with its use of pale color and metallic paper.â€ I began this series by taking photographs of very old places. Using the computer I clean away any evidence of human presence â€“ leaving only the patina of age, empty public spaces and a sense that there might have been some sort of cataclysm. Yet the architecture itself elicits an impression of life, albeit so old that its molecules are barely holding together.
I am a photographer, born and raised in Southern California, and currently living and working in Hollywood. My father was a hobbyist photographer with a darkroom in the garage. He always wanted to share his passion for photography with me, but as a child, I just wasnâ€™t interested. It wasnâ€™t until I reached college that I realized that Photography was the creative outlet I had been searching for. This realization led me to a 36-plus year career as a photography teacher for the Los Angeles Unified School District. It was a very fulfilling career with my students winning hundreds of awards and prizes in art competitions at the local, state, and national level. Many have gone on to have successful careers in photography. At the same time, I also pursued my own course as a free-lance and fine art photographer. Over the past 25 years, I have been in over 50 gallery shows, both solo and invitational exhibitions, as well as other group shows. My most recent solo shows were â€œIdealEstateâ€ and â€œThe Manipulated Imageâ€. The IdealEstate series, short for Idealized Real Estate, was first shown at the Los Angeles Art Association/Gallery 825 in West Hollywood, and subsequently had selections included in â€œGreetings From the American Dreamâ€ show at the Riverside Art Museum, and in â€œThe American Lifescapeâ€ at dba256 Gallery in Pomona, California. â€œThe Manipulated Imageâ€ show was a three-part show (Cloudscapes, The Canal Houses of Venice, and Slice of Life) exhibited in four gallery spaces at the Cal Poly Pomona Downtown Center for the Arts in Pomona, California. I have recently retired from teaching to be a full time artist. My most recent project involves a visual diary of the road trip I took, with my wife, from Chicago to Los Angeles on Route 66.
