My homage to W. Eugene Smith, likewise born in the Midwest, and a continuing influence on my present work. His ever-expanding, extraordinarily obsessive “Pittsburgh Project†inspired the first of many trips to the “Steel Cityâ€. Proud of its roots as a manufacturing center, much of its rich and complex culture is gradually waning from lack of resources and a dearth of jobs, with many neighborhoods outside the flourishing downtown struggling to stay afloat.
