Sigmund Freud believed that dreams give people a way to deal with painful material that we cannot deal with consciously. Other psychologists believe that nightmares prepare us for the stress and anxiety which we face in waking life. “Nightmares” explores our darkest dreams as photographic images, ranging from the “typical” nightmares experienced universally to the deeply personal. This series invites viewers to share in these experiences by drawing connections between the nightmares of others depicted in my work and their own, as well as continuing the discussion of what haunts them in their sleep and why. My hope is that my work provokes conversation which leads to a better understanding of nightmares and therefore lessens the harmful impact they may have on the conscious mind.
