Every year (and as many generations before) thousands of Andalusians make the pilgrimage to the little town of El Rocio to worship 'The Virgin of El Rocio' on her yearly outing around the streets of the town. There are many different ways and paths in which this pilgrimage can be made but perhaps the most beautiful being the one that goes across and through 'Doñana National Park' (one of Europe’s last great wetlands). Three days to travel the 50 km that separate the town of Sanlucar de Barrameda to El Rocio going across landscapes that range from pine tree forests to desert lands. All of this under a punishing sun and temperatures that can soar up to 35-40 celsius. However, pilgrims maintain their high spirits throughout the pilgrimage and it is usual to hear them singing and dancing to local music with lyrics dedicated to their Virgin.
