Entry Description

Sisters is a Singapore gay terminology for a transgendered woman. Being a Sister in a conservative society like Singapore is a hard route to take. One of the many challenges that transgender woman in Singapore face is job discrimination. For this very reason, many transgender women in Singapore become sex workers as sex work tends to be the only way they can earn a living. I reached out to Sherry Sherqueshaa, a former sex worker who is now a researcher and writer at Project X, a non-profit organisation comprising of a small team of dedicated volunteers who would walk the streets of Geylang to reach out to sex workers. They aim to end the stigma and discrimination that results in physical, verbal, emotional and financial violence against sex workers in Singapore. Sisters is a documentary project that discovers an unseen part of Singapore, particularly the lives of transgendered sex workers.
