Being a fisherman in Elmina (Ghana) means exhausting work and only a few coins in one's pocket to show for it. The fish often fall below the minimum-size limit and thus do not have time to grow before being caught. Paradoxically, this means that the more fish they catch the poorer they will become over time. With the aim of reversing the current impoverished condition of marine life, the European Community is committed to a programme to help Ghanaian fishermen improve both their economic situation and their surroundings.
