Rarely seen and hardly heard of, these are the hard working lumpers of the working waterfront of the fishing industry.  It's an aging part of the fishing business. The younger generation is not interested in this kind of work. The fish are off loaded one basket at a time by a winch up on the wharf. Lumpers are on call, with an unpredictable schedule. Unloading starts at 3A.M. with some vessels, and others it starts when the vessel pulls into port. Later starts mean finishing up can end at midnight, especially with large 140,000lb trips. The fish hold is approximately 30'x40'. High quality fresh fish is still viable business and important to many. Ground fish species cannot be automated because it would damage the quality of the fish. These kinds of fish are handled up to 25-30 times from time it’s caught, until it's on a dinner plate.
