Few objects in daily life embody harmony as much as the ordinary street bench. At first glance, this picture depicts a serene and harmonious mood as the textures of the perfectly symmetric bench blends cohesively with its surrounding. However, when taking notice of the decaying state of the concrete wall and floor, the representation of the bench as place of rest and contemplation, to regain harmony, doesn’t hold much longer. This discrepancy confronts the viewer with a seeming desire for harmony. Perhaps to mask a less harmonious state deeper in the mind. The attempt to overpaint the wall does not at all hide the streaks and graffiti, it rather makes us more aware of the mess underneath.
