Nepal is a land of the sacred. God is present everywhere. Daily life is infused with spirituality. People, animals, cars, motorbikes, trees, mountains, and stones are worshipped. Nepali people are among the friendliest people I have met anywhere. When I collided with a bicyclist on the streets of Kathmandu, the rider looked up at me with a smile, shrugging his shoulders, and said, “Ke garne?” “What to do?” No blame. Life moves forward. I lived in Kathmandu on a grant to study Ayurveda, and every day I biked across town through Durbar Square. These porters were relaxing after emptying their load, and for me, they exuberated brotherhood, comradery, relaxation, and harmony, entwining their arms so that they become one.
