Weimar New Town is a new city built just outside Shanghai's center. It was part of the 2001 Satellite project initiated to move some of Shanghai's rapidly growing population in 9 surrounding cities. Each city is connected to a nearby industry; 'Weimar' is connected to a German VW plant. To this day almost no one is living there. This project shows the struggle China faces in it's decentralization process in dealing with the concept of national identity by transforming nationality (Germanish) into an element in processes of marketing and branding and brings up issues of creative originality and copyright.
