Story

«Fünf Begegnungen in Sambia» (description in english below)
The work contains five portraits of people I met in Zambia in October 2011. They pay attention to the rhythm of a region where people don't have a watch but time to spare.

1. It was a hot day when I met him along the Great North Road in Kapiri Mposhi.
This is a major truck road in Zambia.
He doesn’t know how old the Mercedes Benz truck exactly is, approximately 40 or 50 years. But these old trucks are still in use for regular transports in Africa. This specific truck is only running on three of four cylinders so it has to be repaired. He needs one day to disassemble the engine. And three day to build it in. It is hard work under the African sun.

2. When I met Joseph, he was waiting for the train at the station of Kapiri Mposhi.
The train from north heading to Lusaka and Livingstone is always late. Most of the passengers know that very well. Planned arrival time in Livingstone is Saturday 8 p.m., but it is expected to arrive at four or six o’clock on Sunday morning. Only the poor people of Zambia travel by train, it's slow and cheap. Faster, more comfortable and also more expensive is to travel by bus. But to travel by bus is not affordable for many Zambian people.

Virginia is waiting for guests. All the time. There is nothing to do out here in the rural area. But someone has to be here if a guest comes to that place. Most of the guests stay only for one night on their way from north to south or back. Virgina herself would rather like to travel. Her favourite travel destination would be Europe. Or at least to the Victoria falls. She once traveled to the frontier. But for her, there is no money and no free time to travel.
And so the time is running while Virginia is waiting for guests.
