Dazzling is a series of portraits of the contestants, attendants and audience members of the Platinum International Newcomers Pageant in Birmingham, Alabama. They are primarily African American and bring with that a culture distinct from white pageants, a culture of church, community and separateness. I see correlations to the separate cultures of the Choupitoulas Indians of New Orleans and the Gullahs of South Carolina.
