I could not resist the temptation of putting on the same footing two handiworks that, for their own nature, are even further than one can imagine: the ex-sugar refinery of Codigoro (Ferrara-Italy), built in 1899 and working until the 1960s, and the San Galgano Cathedral (Siena-Italy), built in the 12th century and abandoned in 1789. The idea of putting near one another two so different items, sacred and profane, arose when I accidentally bumped into the sugar refinery: a monumental, open-pit ‘cathedral’ with an astonishing structure. My return to San Galgano was beyond any expectation making the comparison become more than a game of analogies.
