Lupercalia is a three-year documentary project by British photographer Billy Macrae. The project examines grassroots sport in the United Kingdom - a country for whom sport is a national obsession for which there is no rival. In the past three years, the UK has hosted the Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth games, and it is currently bidding for the Soccer World Cup, among other global events. It is a country in which sport is discussed and watched by men and women alike with almost religious fervour, from the streets of central London to the mountains of rural Scotland. However, behind the professional sport men and women featured in the media, lies an army of amateurs competing at their sport day in, day out (whatever the weather), for the sheer love of it. It is this group that Billy Macrae has chosen to photograph. Alternately beautiful, surreal and humorous, the project takes in more than 10 sports across the United Kingdom. The project is ongoing.
